Coeliac Disease

Coeliac Disease is a permanent intestinal reaction to gluten. Coeliac Disease currently has no cure, and is chronic. With coeliac disease, the cells in your small intestine become inflamed and damaged. This causes flattening of the villi, (the villi are tiny finger-like parts of your intestine). The function of your villi is to breakdown and absorb the nutrients from your food, so they’re quite important to have functioning properly. This is why so many coeliacs suffer from malnutrition, and a lot of them are unhealthily skinny (not always the case). This may lead to specfic deficencies, such as vitamin D, vitamin B-12 and folate. There are around 100,000 people in New Zealand with Coeliac Disease, 30,000 of them likely to be children under the age of 18. However, a large portion of those people are unlikely to know that they have it. Symptoms often present as gastro-intestinal issues, low blood count (anaemia), and osteoporosis.

OUR MISSION

My main priority for this business is to raise awareness for illnesses that most people do not know enough about, with the main focus being Coeliac Disease. These things affect real people and it can be very lonely when you feel no one understands it. I want to use my platforms and my sales to make a positive impact on the future generations who may inherit these illnesses.
